A marriage of sorts was arranged between Dido and Aeneas at the instigation of Juno, who was told that her favorite city would eventually be defeated by the Trojans' descendants. In the course of his travels, Aeneas stops in Carthage, where he has a passionate love affair with the recently widowed Queen Dido. Once he learns that the gods have assigned him another, more glorious fate, however, Aeneas dutifully abandons Dido, whereupon she kills herself in rage and despair. This tale is told in both Virgil’s Aeneid and Marlowe’s Dido. The First Player tells the story of the death of Priam, caused by Pyrrhus, the son of Achilles. Pyrrhus fights in the Trojan War because his father fought in the war and was killed. Pyrrhus kills Priam mercilessly on an alter after the fall of Troy.

There he was received by Dido, the widowed queen, to whom he told his story. They fell in love, and he lingered there until he was sharply reminded by Mercury that Rome was his goal. Guilty and wretched, he immediately abandoned Dido, who committed suicide, and Aeneas sailed on until he finally reached the mouth of the Tiber.

Dido and Aeneas often gets performed by schools that lack a great number of male voices, but that does not mean that the male lead is not important, or difficult. Many male performers don't like to play Aeneas because most of his music is sung in recitative arioso, or recitative , which is difficult to sing for a number of reasons, as told to me by the baritone singing Aeneas. He tells Dido that he is "duty-bound." Aeneas faces adversity without ever losing faith in the will of fate. For example, his faith is reinforced when he sees the temple Dido built to honor Juno, "Here for the first time he took heart to hope / For safety, and to trust his destiny more / Even in affliction."
That kind of turns the original story of Aeneas on its head in an interesting way: the original Aeneas is ultimately victorious in founding Rome, the new Troy, but it looks like this Aeneas close to suffering defeat.
